ASR XL Hip Replacement Linked to Increased Risk of Heart Failure

March 17th, 2016 by Cutter Law

There are lots of interesting findings coming out of the recent annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. One piece of research that caught our attention was the news that researchers have found a link between the metal-on-metal ASR XL hip implant and heart failure in men.

Of his research, Dr. Stephen Graves of Adelaide, Australia said:

“As far as we are aware, this is the first cohort study to indicate an association with heart failure the use of the ASR XL prosthesis. The effect was evident in men. We were able to quantify the incidence in the study population, and the incidence was not small.”

Dr. Graves and his team used data from the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs health claim database, pinpointing over 2000 men who’d had a hip replacement. From there, they isolated 87 patients who’d been implanted with the DePuy ASR XL replacement. Once they adjusted for age, the team found that patients with the ASR XL had almost double the risk of heart failure compared to patients who’d received metal-on-polyethylene implants.

Dr. Graves noted that “use of the implant did not have an effect on the heart failure rates of women who received the implant”.
