Smith & Nephew Hip Implant Recall
Similar to the other metal hip replacement products, Smith & Nephew’s R3 Acetabular System contains a metal cup, metal head, and metal liner inside the cup.
The R3 liner has a much higher failure rate than what was previously disclosed by Smith & Nephew. Estimates put the global failure rate as high as 7 percent. Following an increase in adverse reports, Smith & Nephew issued a worldwide recall in June 2012 for the metal liner from their R3 Acetabular System. It is estimated that nearly 4,000 patients may have received one of the R3 liners prior to the recall.
The R3 implant was recalled after an increase in reports of injuries caused by the implant, including loosening, pain in the hip, infection, dislocation, device failure and metal sensitivity.
